  • Colombian Emeralds are colored by Chromium, Vanadium and Iron oxide, which give a bright and rich green second to none.

  • Colombian Emeralds are the most prestigious around the world and they are used as quality reference for gems elsewhere.

  • There are more than 200 places at the emerald belt in Boyaca, Colombia. The most important mines are Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez and La Pita.

  • Emerald crystals grew about 35 to 65 million years ago when temperature, pressure and chemical environment were favorable.

  • Emerald mining in Colombia is done through tunneling following the white calcite veins with possible emerald crystalls.

  • Sometimes emerald crystals intergrow within phantom crystals or together to each other. It is called Emerald Macle.

  • Transparency or clarity is the amount or absence of inclusions within a gemstone. In emeralds is considered clarity type III.

  • Trapiche emeralds are very rare and are highly priced by collectors. Found only in Colombia from the Muzo or Peñas Blancas mines.

  • Emerald is the name of a unique green variety of the mineral beryl.

  • Emeralds are not as hard as diamonds, rubies or sapphires but they are much harder than amethyst, citrine, blue topaz, tanzanite and pearls.

  • After clean with acids, wash out, cut, polish and soak in alcohol or acetone; All Emeralds are immersed in  resins to enhance clarity.

  • Unit weight for gemstones is called carat (ct.) which is equal to 0,20 grams. Each one is divided into a hundred parts called points (pts.).

  • Refractive index, is the ratio of the speed of light in the air compare to the speed of light in a gemstone.
